The Lovely family was big winners at the 17th Sugar River Craft Race on Saturday. Taking first place and beating the record of 44 minutes were Gavin Lovely and Alex Whipple in the Wet Sandwich. The craft raft however, was not made from bread but from an industrial door. Gavin and Alex attributed their win to using oars.
Gavin’s twins brothers Ryder and Jagger Lovely took second place along with their uncle Ryan McKenney Their craft raft was made from an old barn door and their secret to placing second –paddle hard.
The event that was started by the Newport Recreation Department is now sponsored by Sugar River Softball to benefit the Newport Youth Girl’s Softball. Organizer Jeremy Willey said the craft race runs the same day as the duck race and they raised about $6,000 this year.
