Scam Alert

IRS ScamThe Lebanon Police Department has seen an increase in IRS (Internal Revenue Service) and other scam phone calls. We have received reports of citizens being told they have not filed their taxes for years and also voicemails threatening legal action if the person did not call back a provided number left in the false message. These scammers will try to trick you into sharing private information or sending money and may even know a lot about you.
The IRS website reports that if you owe taxes, the IRS will first contact you by mail, not by telephone and would never do the following which are tell-tale signs of a scam:
1. Ask for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the phone.
2. Insist you must pay your taxes using a specific payment method.
3. Demand immediate payment over the phone or take enforcement action directly after a phone conversation. Do Not Be Fooled
If you receive a suspicious phone call and feel it is a scam, hang up and take these steps:
For IRS scams: Call 1-800-366-4484
For all other phone scams: Call 1-888-468-4454
Information on consumer scam alerts can be found on the New Hampshire Office of the Attorney General website
If you feel you are the victim of a scam in Lebanon, please feel free to call Lebanon Police at (603) 448-1212.
