Charlestown Man Killed in Afternoon Crash

fatal accidentA Charlestown man was killed this afternoon after his bicycle collided with a car in Charlestown.  Just after 4:00 pm the Charlestown Police Department and the New Hampshire State Police, Troop C, responded the collision  on Route 12 near the intersection of Route 12A in Charlestown.
The preliminary investigation determined that the bicyclist, identified as Lance Torrey, age 50, of Charlestown was traveling north on Route 12 in the northbound breakdown lane when for unknown reasons he veered into the northbound travel lane into the path of a northbound Acura Integra which struck him. The Acura was driven by Jeremiah Lawrence, age 23, of Claremont. Mr. Torrey was transported to the Springfield Hospital in Springfield, Vermont where he was pronounced dead. Mr. Lawrence was not injured. Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in this collision.
The NH State Police are handling the investigation and were assisted on scene by members of the Charlestown Police Department, and the Charlestown Fire and Rescue Departments. Route 12 was closed and traffic diverted in the area for approximately four hours while the scene was documented.
The collision remains under investigation; however it does not appear that any criminal charges will be filed. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Trooper Charles Newton at 223-8494.
