NH and VT Among Highest Property Tax States

US property taxes levied on single family homes last year totaled more than $277 billion dollars.  NH had the fourth highest property tax rate in the county, following NJ, IL, and Texas.  Our Vermont neighbors followed, us coming in at number five.

Across the US the average annual property tax was $3,296 an effective tax rate of 1.15 percent, New Jersey had 2.31 percent, Illinois 2.13 percent; Texas 2.06 percent; New Hampshire 2.03 percent; and Vermont 2.02 percent.

States with the lowest effective property tax are Hawaii 0.32 percent; Alabama 0.48 percent; and Colorado with 0.52 percent.
