On Monday, April 24, 2017, at approximately 2:35 pm, Troopers assigned to the New Hampshire State Police Troop A barracks responded to a report of a motor vehicle rollover involving a tractor trailer on the Route 101 eastbound exit ramp to Interstate 95 in Hampton. Upon arrival, Troopers encountered the tractor and fully loaded trailer rolled onto the driver’s side. The tractor trailer unit has spilled an entire load of wood and was blocking the entire ramp.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Unit #1, a 2003 Peterbilt, being operated by Kenneth Pitts, age 23 of El Dorado, CA, was driving on the ramp from Route 101 eastbound to Interstate 95 when Mr. Pitts lost control of the vehicle due to unreasonable speed. The trailer of Unit 1 began to rotate clockwise, pulling both the trailer and tractor portion over onto its side and spilling the contents of the trailer.
Mr. Pitts was not injured in the crash.
Due to the placement of the TT unit in the roadway, and the spillage of the trailers contents, the ramp from Route 101 east to Interstate 95 was closed for approximately 6 ½ hours while crews worked to clean up the scene.
The New Hampshire State Police, Troop A, were assisted at the scene by New Hampshire State Police Troop G, and members of the Hampton Police Department, Hampton Fire and Rescue, and NH Department of Transportation. The TT unit was removed from the scene by National Wrecker of Portsmouth.
The cause of this crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information pertaining to this incident is asked to contact Trooper Jeff Costa, New Hampshire State Police, Troop A, at (603)223-8490.
