Newport Accident Result of Driver Fatigue

The Newport Police Department Communications Center received several 911 calls at 5:08 pm on April 26 advising that there had been a motor vehicle accident on John Stark Highway just West of Whitcher Road.  It was reported that a vehicle had gone off the road striking and breaking a telephone pole taking down the wires.  Newport Police, EMS and Fire Rescue responded and found Jason Carrier, 31 of Claremont had been traveling towards Claremont and went off the left side of the road striking a telephone pole.  The pole was completely destroyed, with power, telephone and cable wires down blocking the travel lanes.  Due this pole breaking, utility services were affected for several hours and John Stark Highway was closed to through traffic for approximately 45 minutes, however utility crews remained on scene and all utility work was completed today April 27 at approximately 12 noon.

Carrier was operating his 2006 Acura TSX at the time of the accident.   The cause of the accident is attributed to driver fatigue.

Carrier’s vehicle sustained extensive damage and was recovered by Stones Auto Body.  Carrier only received minor injuries and was treated released by the Newport Ambulance Service.
