A proposed zoning amendment that is going before Hanover voters on May 9th would change the definition of “residence”. Article 9 would end the existing requirement of Dartmouth College’s recognition and supervision of those living in a residence, and allow fraternities, sororities, and other organizations to operate residences while having no connection to the College, and no oversight by college officials.
An attorney representing two derecognized fraternities organized the petition drive for the amendment. Hanover’s current zoning ordinance allows no more than three unrelated persons to live together, unless an exception applies. An exception has been allowed for fraternities and other student houses that are affiliated with, and supervised by Dartmouth.
The Hanover Zoning Board and Dartmouth College do not recommend the amendment. Hanover residents will vote on this and other articles during the Ballot Voting portion of their Annual Town Meeting on May 9, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 pm at Hanover High School.
