On Wednesday evening, July 26th, the Vermont State Police received numerous 911 calls related to an ongoing incident in the area of 5545 Route 102 in the town of Maidstone, VT. One of the callers reported a male chasing a female with a knife on foot. Another caller reported hearing a gunshot and that a neighbor reported a male, identified as Jason McLain dropped off his two children at the neighbors house. The neighbor reported that McLain had blood on him and then left on foot.
Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies responded to the scene. First responding officers were from the Essex County Sheriff’s Department and were joined by the Vermont State Police, U.S. Border Patrol and New Hampshire State Police. Responding officers located Jason McLain alive but with an apparent self inflicted gun shot wound inside the residence at 5545 Route 102. Rescue responded and transported McLain to Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, NH and he was later transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. His condition is unknown at this time.
Responding officers located the two children at the neighbor’s house unharmed. Officers continued to search for McLain’s estranged wife, Molly McLain, and eventually located her injured across the road from the residence. Molly McLain had sustained apparent serious injuries to her head and torso to include a stab wound. Molly McLain was transported by rescue to Weeks Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Her body was transported to the New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Concord, NH for autopsy in order to determine cause and manner of death.
Vermont State Police detectives from the Major Crime Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigations responded to investigate. A portion of VT Route 102 near the scene will remain closed until members of the Crime Scene Search Team can process the scene and collect evidence.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that Molly and Jason McLain are married with two children, ages 4 and 2. Detectives learned that on 06/16/17 Jason McLain was arrested for domestic assault on Molly McLain and interference with emergency services. He was arraigned and released on conditions set by the court. On 06/23/17, Jason McLain was served a Final Order For Relief From Abuse that prohibited him from having any contact with the plaintiff, Molly McLain and that she have sole custody of the residence located at 5545 Route 102. This order is filed at the Essex County Superior Court, Family Division and can be referenced for specific stipulations included in this order.
