Keene Police Department Welcomes New K-9 Vader

K-9 Vader is a 4 year-old German Shepard who was born in Belgium and comes to us from the Town of Windham, ME Police Department. He had been employed with Windham P.D. since he was a puppy and has twice certified as a patrol K-9 through the United States Police Canine Association.

.

As a certified patrol K-9, Vader has several successful patrol cases while serving the Windham, ME community.

Windham P.D. determined that they could no longer employ K-9 Vader but felt that he could still be of service to another agency. He was independently evaluated by the Working Dog Foundation –NH Police Canine Academy and judged to be a an excellent fit to be placed with the Keene Police Department and handled by our current handler, Officer Josh English.

The Keene Police Department agreed to purchase and took possession of K-9 Vader on November 6, 2017. He and Officer English have already begun training. The team is expected to certify together in the next few months.

Our current K-9, Patriot, was purchased in 2010 via a grant through the Working Dog Foundation.  K-9 Patriot has served our community admirably but is nearing retirement age and recent medical problems have accelerated the time of his retirement.  As such, K-9 Patriot will soon be retired to the home of Officer English and his family as their personal pet, in accordance with the longstanding custom for working dogs.

K-9 Vader and Officer English will continue to train at the Working Dog Foundation -NH Canine Academy as our department has since 1995.
